Welcome to your Week in Tech – our video round up of this week’s top technology news.
Investments
Plentific, one of the UK’s fastest growing PropTech startups, raised £2m in funding backed by Property Innovation Labs (Pi Labs) and other tech investors. This brings the total investment in the company to just over £2.9m.
Echobox landed $3.4m in funding from Mangrove Capital Partners. The London-based startup said it would use the funding to drive adoption of its AI service globally among major publishers and content creators.
Outside of London, Cambridge-based startup Kisanhub raised $1m to continue developing its agricultural technology enterprise platform, plus cybersecurity firm Darktrace landed $65m in a round led by global investment company KKR.
Other UK tech investments this week include the £8m Series A funding raised by Post-Quantum, the £3m investment closed by Lending Works and the £6.2m raised by data science firm Black Swan.
DeepMind Health and the NHS
Google-owned DeepMind Health collaborated with the National Health Service in a partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The aim is to investigate how machine learning algorithms could help to analyse eye scans and detect diseases that cause blindness.
Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, said: “Detecting eye diseases as early as possible gives patients the best possible chance of getting the right treatments.”
Google and Moodstocks
Google acquired French startup Moodstocks, a company that has developed machine-learning based image recognition technology This comes just two weeks after Twitter announced its acquisition of machine-learning outfit Magic Pony.
The deal with Moodstocks is just one example of the growth of artificial intelligence companies in Paris, and provides an addition to Google’s many machine learning services.
Organ donation
In other overseas tech news, organ donation will be promoted in the US through Apple’s iOS10 update.
The health app allows users to register for organ, tissue and eye donation. Once registered, user data is sent directly to the National Donate Life Registry.
