Innovate UK opens £140,000 smart cities contest

Innovate UK has opened applications for its IC tomorrow programme, held in partnership with TfL, Clear Channel Outdoor, Centro and Atkins, to find smart innovations to solve some of London’s biggest problems.

There will be four winners chosen across four smart cities categories: enhanced travel data with Transport for London, effective journey management with Centro, city-scale communication with Clear Channel Outdoor and citizen input to city design with Atkins.

As well as each receiving up to £35,000 in funding, while retaining their IP, the winners will also get the opportunity to work with the relevant commercial partner to accelerate their tech towards a trial in 2016.

Matt Sansam, lead technologist, digital economy and programme manager for IC tomorrow, said: “As the number of people choosing to live in cities around the world continues to rise, it is vital that we think about the future to make sure these urban spaces work to their full potential.

“Innovative digital technology has the power to provide solutions to ensure that our cities are effective and efficient for the users. This contest seeks out entrepreneurs and small businesses that can address some of the most pressing challenges our urban areas face.”

The deadline for applications is 12pm on 24 November with shortlisted entries invited to a live pitch and Q&A with a panel of judges.

The winners will be announced in January.
