Two thirds of key B2B sectors not mobile-ready

You’d be hard pushed to find any business person who wasn’t aware of the news that on 21 April 2015, Google launched its latest algorithm update, dubbed “Mobilegeddon.” The update is aimed at improving the search results for mobile users.

Unless of course you were speaking to an accountant or a training company. According to a survey of over 800 companies conducted by UK Web Host Pickaweb.co.uk, only 3 in 10 of these businesses have mobile-ready websites.

The test was run using Google’s Mobile Friendly Testing Tool which helps to determine whether or not a site is mobile-friendly.

But why all the fuss over mobile all of a sudden? Given the exponential growth in mobile browsing and Google’s pre-eminent place in the mobile world, it is no surprise that at some point they would force the hand of businesses to make the switch to mobile.

We have been advising our customers to get a mobile-ready website for several years now. Maybe now the message will start to get through, although we weren’t surprised by the results of our survey.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Whilst the results affect only mobile searches, Google’s algorithm takes into account so many different factors that even non mobile sites may still get a good ranking if they are deemed relevant enough.

Maybe the winners here will be the web designers who have a potential Responsive Web Design Gold Rush on their hands.
