Welsh tech startups celebrated at 2016 ESTnet Awards ceremony

Cardiff-based online polling platform Doopoll has been named tech startup of the year by the body representing Wales’ technology sector.

The 2016 ESTnet Awards, which seek to shine the spotlight on the successes of young Welsh companies impacting the UK’s tech sector, saw Doopoll pick up the Sir Michael Mortiz Award.

Marc Thomas, co-founder of Doopoll, said: “We’re really happy to have won the awards especially considering the great companies we were shortlisted with.

“We think having the recognition of the ESTnet will be a big help to promoting the product we are proud of and securing new clients,” added the co-founder.

The ESTnet’s ‘Innovative Software’ award went to Zipporah, a business management solutions and online booking software provider. Additionally, Emma Powell, Zipporah’s managing director, received the  ‘Industry Role Model’ award for 2016.

The National Software Academy received the ‘Collaborative Partnership’ award.  A partnership between Cardiff University, the Alacrity Foundation and Welsh Government, the Academy aims to deliver industry-focused degrees in software engineering to provide students with academic experience of relevant and leading-edge technologies.

Other award winners included:

  • SPTS Technologies, manufacturer  of  capital  equipment  for  the  global  semiconductor industry, was presented with the ‘Company of the Year’ title.
  • Corey Lewis from SPTS  received the 2016 ESTnet ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award.
  • The title of ‘Young Engineer of the Year’ was awarded to Andrew Griffiths of semiconductor wafer company, IQE plc.
  • The 2016 ESTnet ‘Innovative Product’ award was presented to Caldicot-based, electronics’ design and manufacturing business, MicroSemi.

Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology Julie James, present at the event, said:  “I am delighted to be able to celebrate the achievements of the ESTnet members and the ICT technology sector in Wales.

“Wales is rightly recognised as a leading UK Technology Centre.  We have global blue chip companies, world class academic research, innovative SMEs and a vibrant start-up scene. I am proud that Welsh Government has supported the growth of the ICT sector by helping to create, safeguard or assist over 7,500 high value and highly skilled jobs,”  concluded James.
