Visa shows off in-car and social payments at MWC

Visa has announced a partnership with Pizza Hut that could make payments truly mobile.

The connected car concept gives drivers in-car access to menus, along with delivery and pick-up options via Visa Checkout.

Working with Accenture, Visa will be trialling the use of beacon technology to alert Pizza Hut staff when the driver is about to arrive.

The tech is being demoed at Mobile World Congress and will start being road tested in the US this spring.

Although it might seem an innovation too far, Bill Gajda, SVP of innovation and strategic partnerships at Visa, says he expects this test to rapidly expand to purchases of different everyday items.

Visa is also talking up its next-gen payments platform Visa Direct, which enables users to pay other Visa cardholders using just a phone number, as well as Twitter, Facebook WhatsApp and LinkedIn.

A new API will make it easier for devs to integrate the service and it’s set to launch this summer. The arrival of this platform could also signal an easier ride for Apple Pay into Europe.
