UKTI to host export event for Midlands gaming and digital firms

The UKTI will be holding an export event for Midlands-based gaming and digital companies later in September as it looks to encourage firms to seize opportunities and get the support they need to grow their businesses overseas.

Speakers at the event, which takes place at at the offices of Arch Creatives in Leamington Spa, include Dr Jo Twist, CEO of Ukie, the trade body for the UK’s games and wider interactive entertainment industry, and Tim Crouch, US sector lead for the creative and media industries from the British Consulate-General in Los Angeles.

Ollie Clarke, the founder of Arch Creatives, which is a coworking space for digital gaming professionals in Leamington Spa, will share his experience about working in a global market place, as part of a local network.

UKTI advisers will also be on hand to offer specialist advice on how businesses can tap into the lucrative global gaming market, currently worth £1.43bn to the UK economy.

Mark Sankey, head of the UKTI international trade team in the Birmingham, said there is a strong gaming community in the West Midlands. Currently 8% of national gaming companies are based in the region but as home to one of the UK’s 12 gaming clusters and with several university courses on offer, there is a burgeoning opportunity.

He said: “Many gaming firms are start-ups or small businesses but there is still huge potential to tap into the global market. This event will allow to access support, which will help them market themselves internationally and establish a network of contacts which can help them expand.

“There will be information and advice on funding to help local firms join a major group of UK companies heading to the Game Developers’ Conference in the US in March which is a key market place for the worldwide industry.

“Support on offer will include planning a strategy for the show and beyond, sector briefings, a guided floor-walk of the show and also a network reception. UKTI advisers will be on hand to help local creative, digital companies fulfil their potential by maximising opportunities overseas.”

The event takes place from 4-7pm on 29 September.
