Uber’s appeal over loss of London license to begin in Spring

Uber’s appeal against the loss of its operating license in London is set to begin in either April or June next year, meaning the US company will not receive a final decision until Summer 2018.

A judge at Westminster Magistrates’ Court said today that preliminary hearings would take place next week in a bid to decide whether the London Taxi Drivers’ Association and the GMB trade union can participate in the battle between Transport for London (TfL) and Uber.

The news comes after TfL failed to renew Uber’s operating license in London after deciding the firm was not “fit and proper” to continue runnings its service in the UK capital.

TfL took its decision over safety concerns, including Uber’s process for reporting alleged sexual assaults by drivers to the police.

Uber decided to appeal the decision a month later. The US firm can continue operating in London while the appeal is pending.

Uber made the news after reports said it had suffered and concealed a breach, which affected the personal information of 57 million customers and drivers worldwide, last year.

The company confirmed it had paid the hackers responsible for the attack $100,000 to delete all the stolen data.

In other news, the European Court of Justice is expected to publish a ruling over the coming weeks over whether Uber should be defined as a digital platform or a transport firm. The decision could inevitably impact how the business is regulated.
