Top industries for great work benefits

Work benefits

Work-life balance ranks as a bigger priority of all work benefits for UK workers, more than higher pay (61% vs 39%) in both current and future jobs, according to the latest Amex Trendex Report

Looking at priorities for 2024, the survey found that almost three-quarters of UK workers (71%) say having a good work-life balance is the main reason for job satisfaction, and 77% said it was the top priority when looking for a new job.

The timing of this survey collides neatly with new analysis conducted by employee equity management platform Vestd, which cross-referenced 20 common work benefits, including hybrid/flexible working, company share schemes, life and dental insurance, enhanced maternity and maternity leave, childcare and profit sharing, with UK job ads on Indeed.

The company then weighted the best scoring by sector, and marked them out of 2,000.

Industries with the best work benefits

It found that the best scoring industries for benefits are: Aerospace and Defence (994), Government and Public Administration (877), Telecommunications (790), Information Technology (790) Manufacturing (737), Insurance (709), Energy and Mining Utilities (700), Agriculture (629), Finance (586), and Media and Communications (480).

Top of the pops is Aerospace and Defence, and after analysing 3,000 jobs descriptions in this sector, hybrid/flexible working emerged as the most commonly offered benefit.

Next up was Government and Public Administration which offers flexibility, followed by Telecommunications which most commonly offered bonuses as a perk.

Industries with room for improvement

Conversely, also featured in the analysis were the worst industries to work in, looking specifically at work benefits. Remember, these are marked out of 2,000, with the best scoring industry reaching 994.

The lowest scoring industries were: Non-profit and NGO (85), Management and Consulting (207), Restaurant and Food Service (216), Personal Consumer Services (263), Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology (281), Real Estate (307), Retail and Wholesale (345), Transport and Logistics (351), Healthcare (365) and Education (370).

Non-profits and NGOs scored the lowest of all, with an index score of just 85, while Management and Consulting was second lowest with 207, although the most popular benefit offered was hybrid/flexible working for the latter.

“While many companies like to shout about the office pool table or mini bar, we’re seeing people veering away from these sorts of quirky benefits while on the hunt for their next role,” said Vestd founder and CEO, Ifty Nasir.

“Given the cost of living crisis, employees are now on the lookout for tangible benefits that offer a true reward for their hard work or help them to achieve their day-to-day duties in the role.”
