startup weekly 10th june

Here’s your weekly round up of news about startup competitions, awards, co-working spaces, accelerators and any other exciting things happening in the UK tech sector.

New cybersecurity accelerator

CyLon London and the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT) have partnered to launch HutZero.

The early-stage accelerator programme is now accepting applications from individuals interested in turning their ideas into successful cyber businesses.

HutZero will take on 20 candidates to join its first cohort in September this year.

“The Government is committed to investing in the UK’s cyber security industry so I’m pleased we’re supporting HutZero, a unique programme for talented individuals wanting to start a cyber security company in the UK. Working with Cyber London and CSIT who are developing this initiative, I hope HutZero will attract the most inquisitive minds from academia, industry, Government and further afield. This programme will help make sure we support the next generation of innovative UK cyber security companies,” said digital economy minister Ed Vaizey.

HutZero is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as part of the Government’s National Cyber Security Programme, which aims to protect the UK in cyber space and promote growth and innovation in the UK cyber security industry.

The accelerator programme will consist of two stages, starting with a week-long bootcamp held at CyLon’s London premises, and an autumn follow-up event.  Participation is cost-free, asHutZero will cover successful applicants’ expenses.

Seedcamp hunts for legal tech startups

Pre-seed and seed stage investor Seedcamp has partnered with global law firm Dentons to find early stage legal tech startups.

Selected startups will receive training and mentorship as well as investment from both Nextlaw Labs and Seedcamp.

Reshma Sohoni, founding partner of Seedcamp, said: “The legal market is primed for fresh, forward-thinking startups to come in and shake up tradition. Using technology we can save law firms, companies and consumers precious time and money, in a market that is a high-cost item for all parties. At Seedcamp we work with the very best Founders to scale businesses that can have a significant impact on the status quo. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Nextlaw Labs to deliver this offer, and continue to expand our investment portfolio to include the rapidly growing world of legal tech.”

Applications are now open.

Startupbootcamp FinTech

FinTech startups now have until the 26th of June to apply to Startupbootcamp’s FinTech accelerator.

The intensive program will seek to provide startups with mentorship, office space in London, funding and access to a global network of investors and VCs for up 10 participants from across the globe.

In return, Startupbootcamp will take 6% equity.

Device Authority has been selected as the UK’s most innovative cybersecurity company by techUK’s Cyber Connect programme and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The company beat finalists Assuria, Intruder and Exonar, following a pitch in front of a live audience at this year’s InfoSecurity Europe.

Samantha Sanderson, UK’s SME cyberecurity champion, Cyber Connect lead, said: “The competition is a great demonstration of the innovation taking place in the UK’s cyber security industry. We would like to thank all of our participants, sponsors and supporters, and congratulate Device Authority on their success.”

The four finalists were chosen following a pitch fest, held at the Cyber Demonstration Centre back in April.
