There have been a number of film crowdfunding stories over the past few years, but never before have British investors been given the opportunity to invest in a major Hollywood film.
The director of Tomb Raider, Con Air and the Expendables Two Simon West is offering the Brits the chance of investing in his next film in exchange for not just the glamour but also equity.
The British-born director is set to direct an action comedy called Salty and hopes that a crowdfunding round through SyndicateRoom will raise $1.8m.
British investors
Though potential crowdfunding investors are being given the opportunity to take part in the funding, it might not be accessible for everyone. The minimum spend will be £1,000.
The total budget for the film of $10m is modest by Hollywood standards, but West believes his track record of commercial success will still allow him to cast A-list stars.
Commenting on the announcement, West said that the reason he opted for raising the funds through SyndicateRoom is that “it attracts investment from both small investors and professional business angels”.
It only lists businesses that have been extensively vetted by these professional investors, who are also laying their own money on the line.
Film’s crowdfunding history
Though it is the first time the opportunity of investing for equity has been given to British investors, it is by no means the first time films have raised funds through crowdfunding.
Last year, Zach Braff raised over $3m via a Kickstarter campaign for his newest film.
Veronica Mars fans also flocked to the platform to raise over $5m to bring a film version of the TV show to life.
