Munich overtook London as Europe’s top tech region, according to a 140-page document released by the European Commission.
Berlin, a city that’s recently been compared with London for its growing tech startup scene, was relegated to 15th place.
Inner London – East?
The report compared regions across Europe to what’s known as “Inner London – East”, which we can only assume refers to the Silicon Roundabout.
This means clusters across the capital including the likes of Croydon, Clapham and Canary Wharf may not have made it into the Commission’s analysis.
Parts of Greater London made their way onto the list in their own right, including Berkshire, Surrey and Hampshire which finished 26th, 29th and 31st respectively. These areas were included due to their strong universities and so it seems academic excellence was a major factor in the report.
Gwynedd tech city?
‘Inner London – East’ was ranked as 18th for its universities, leaving a number of our leading academic institutions out of the rankings.
London’s home to a number of academic powerhouses including the likes of Imperial, LSE and University College London.
Instead, the European Commission found Gwynedd, a small town in North Wales, to be the continent’s best university region.
David Slater, Director of International Business Development at London & Partners, responded to the report:
Major tech companies from around the world continue to be attracted to our city in order to take advantage of what London can offer, and as a result I remain very confident that London will continue to be the digital hub of Europe
