UK government looking to regulate drones

The UK government is looking to introduce a draft bill to regulate the use of drones.

As a result, individuals flying the devices will have to pass a series of safety tests and comply with a mandatory register.

The new rules could also ban drones from being flown near airports and above 400 feet.

As part of the proposals, police would also be granted new powers to ground and seize the devices if these are thought to be involved in illegal activities.

“UK drone companies are exporting their services across the world, showcasing Britain as a leader in innovative services and generating productivity and growth across a range of sectors.

“Drones have great potential and we want to do everything possible to harness the benefits of this technology as it develops.

“But if we are to realise the full potential of this incredibly exciting technology, we have to take steps to stop illegal use of these devices and address safety and privacy concerns.

“These new laws strike a balance, to allow the vast majority of drone users to continue flying safely and responsibly, while also paving the way for drone technology to revolutionise businesses and public services,” said Baroness Sugg, the aviation minister.

The UK government is also looking at ways in which it can implement “no-fly zones”.
