French startup raises €3m to support British freelancers

French startup Crème de la crème has raised €3m in Series A funding to grow its business in the UK.

Originally founded in Paris, the company has created a platform which connects freelancers to relevant jobs within the fields of  tech, data, design, marketing & communication.

The €3m raise was led by Alto Invest and existing investors including French entrepreneurs like Alain Thibaut and Loic Le Meur. The money helped the company to open an office in London last month in order to accelerate its development in the market. The decision to open an office in London rather than elsewhere in Europe was based on the importance freelancing has in the UK, a spokesman said.

More than 3,000 freelancers and more than 500 companies in the UK have already joined the community, according to the company.

Crème de la crème claims to support more than 5,000 companies. The aim is to ease the life of freelancers and the people that hire them. It uses a selection algorithm to showcase only the most relevant profiles to companies. Some of its most notable clients include L’Oreal, LinkedIn, Airbnb or BNP Paribas. Freelancers can also choose to work on projects as a team. A special internal team works on the selection & creation of these teams so the managers don’t have to.

“The freelancers from our community are independent but rarely work alone. More and more of them would rather work in a team on more ambitious projects” Jean-Charles Varlet, CEO of crème de la crème, said. “We think that the UK is filled with talented freelancers, yet managers still use their personal network in order to find freelancers. We’ve decided to help scale that process and use a unique product to gather all of their freelancers together,” he added.

The money is also being used to release a mobile app for freelancers in Europe. The app is expected to be launched in September, and will allow freelancers to manage their projects, engage with the rest of the community, invoice and receive money and find support for administrative challenges they may face.
