Hackney based arts charity to build 3D fabrication lab
The arts charity SPACE is seeking funding for an accessible 3D manufacturing facility for artists and creatives on Kickstarter.
The Fab Lab (Fabrication Laboratory) would provide access to a range of tools for 3D construction, prototyping and experimentation including a 3D printer, a laser cutter, a vinyl cutter as well as soldering irons and a sewing machine for use with conductive thread.
Membership to the space would cost just £20 per year in a bid to ensure its accessibility to people of all ages and backgrounds, according to the campaign page.

Creative tinkering
In addition to providing access to the tools needed for 3D manufacturing, the Fab Lab will host seminars and lectures around the theme of digital manufacturing processes, as well as workshops and 1:1 support with the software and equipment.
Arts charity SPACE hope to foster the inquisitiveness and creative tinkering associated with the maker movement.
Visual and Media Arts Training Manager at SPACE Levin Haegele said, “As a charity that offers support for over 700 artists and designers, an affordable and accessible 3D reproduction facility will not only continue our remit to support artists and designers, but will also allow for creatives across London to try their hand at taking their ideas to a level that may not have been evident before.”
Affordable and accessible
SPACE is a charitable arts organisation founded in 1968 that provides affordable studios and training opportunities for artists and also runs creative learning projects for children.
They are seeking £15,000 to set up Fab Lab, but as they have only raised £1,500 at the time of writing, they are going to need a big push to reach their goal of building a community 3D manufacturing lab at their headquarters on Mare Street, Hackney.
Rewards for pledging include membership and 3D printed sculptures.
