Design, share and make sustainable furniture with Fabsie

Tired of low quality flat-pack furniture? Tweak the design and get it made locally at a fraction of the price

James McBennett launched This Stool Rocks on Kickstarter in London today, the first product to showcase his vision to connect designers, makers and consumers on his design sharing platform Fabsie.

This Stool Rocks is a ready-to-assemble rocking stool that you can put together yourself in less than ten seconds.

The stools come in three shapes, are customisable, and feature minimalist, no-nonsense design, but the really interesting thing here is the philosophy behind the product.

Fabsie takes a leaf out of the open source movement’s book and offers the design files free to download for those with a CNC cutting machine. For the rest of us, the designs will be sent to a local expert and made for you to cut the cost of shipping, making it more sustainable.

Disrupting self-assembly furniture

The idea takes us a step closer to the disruptive business models promised by the 3D printer revolution; if you want a product, download the design file and print it yourself.

Making it personal

Fabsie is meeting us halfway, allowing designers and makers to easily partner to build locally-made furniture using ‘3D cutting’ technology.

The stools come in three designs; Hard Rock, Soft Rock, and Easy Rock, and you can have your company name or logo carved into the seat.

Self proclaimed ‘design-trained entrepreneur’ James McBennett is trying to raise £25,000 by April 13th, and his forward-thinking ideas about design, manufacturing and distribution of products makes Fabsie a service to watch.

James McBennett took part in our first series of the Elevator Pitch at Heron Tower, look out for his pitch video next Tuesday
