Cambridge’s real-world search engine GeoSpock raises £3.5m

Cambridge’s GeoSpock has raised a £3.5m Series A round to help built out its real-world search engine platform and market the product around the world.

Conceived by CEO Steve Marsh while studying for his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge, the round was joined Cambridge Innovation Capital, which specialises in backing local students, as well as companies in the wider cluster.

Cofounder Darrin Disley told Tech City News that the company has solved big data’s big challenge: understanding and using big, moving data in real-time.

GeoSpock is already working with an “unnamed global mapping agency”, as well as logistics firms, to help them use increasing amounts of geo-spatial data – think user-generated data from IoT devices – to improve their products and services.

In the future, the platform could be used by insurance firms, for example, to enable them to offer live actuarial calculations based on things like traffic hotspots and driver performance.

GeoSpock is the resident innovator at Ordnance Survey’s Geovation Hub in London’s Clerkenwell area, where its tech is being used to power the solutions being created by the geo-spatial experts who’ve set up home there.

GeoSpock hopes to become the “go-to search solution for complex, multi-dimensional big data” and was chosen as one of London’s Techstars’ winter cohort at the end of 2014.
