London’s ‘tech-for-good’ incubator is now open for new applications
£15,000 of investment is available for 10 businesses looking to use technology for social good.
Successful applicants will also benefit from a three month support programme to help hone their business idea, connections to a network of investors and customers and three months of central London office space.
Mentorship
Mentors for the programme include Gavin Starks from the Open Data Institute, Blaine Cook (former lead developer at Twitter) and Eze Vidra, Head of Google Campus.
Paul Miller, who co-ordinates the Bethnal Green Ventures programme, offered the following advice to applicants:
“Your idea needs to have the potential to tackle our biggest social and environmental challenges. We’re looking for startups that could eventually improve the lives of millions of people.”
Bethnal Green Ventures is backed by £1.8m of funding from the Cabinet Office’s Social Incubator Fund, Nesta and the Nominet trust.
The scheme has run two programmes since it launched in 2011 and has incubated twelve startups to date. Alumni include:
- DrDoctor – a multi-platform application to improve patient bookings for hospitals.
- Good Gym – get fit by doing good, online tools to help you exercise while volunteering in your community.
- Fairphone – building the world’s first ethical mobile phone.
- Mastodon C – big data specialists helping organisations use data better on zero carbon infrastructure.
