Apps for Good unveils 18 finalists for upcoming awards

Apps for Good has unveiled the 18 teams of students, aged 12 to 19, who will be competing to win the Apps for Good Awards, held during London Tech Week in June.

Three teams are competing in each of the six categories, which cover: sustainable communities, productivity, learning, connected communities, information, and saving, spending and giving. The teams have come up with ideas spanning digital citizenship, the circular economy and supporting young carers.

The finalists will do a live pitch to industry dragons on the day of the ceremony, after which, the winning team in each category will spend the next six months having their app professionally produced with the help of the programme’s major sponsors, before being launched to the public in February next year.

Dragons this year include Margaret Rice-Jones, chairman of Skyscanner, Jemima Kiss, Head of Technology at the Guardian, and Melissa Di Donato, VP EMEA and APA at  Salesforce.com. A host of tech companies have also spent time supporting the finalists ahead of the big day, including: Essence, Eclipse Experience, Fluxx, Moving Brands, SapientNitro, Seven Digital Consultancy, Shift Design, Xactly UK and You view.

Debbie Forster, co-CEO of Apps for Good, said: “At Apps for Good we want to change technology education forever: to turn young tech consumers into tech creators and prepare them to tackle the 21st century workplace. Our course teaches not only digital skills, but also arms students with essential real-world skills such as teamwork, problem solving, confidence and resilience.

“The innovation displayed in this year’s entries demonstrates not just the potential for young people to succeed, but their passion to use technology to change their world for good.”
