Then and Now: Shoreditch Rail Station

London’s east end has seen huge changes over the past 150 years, some of it good and some of it bad. In the second of our three part series, Tech City News broke open London’s archives to contrast horse and carts to Boris bikes, trams to the London Overground and even our beloved (!) Old Street Roundabout.

We took a new photo for 2013 in the very same spot as our archive shot below, taken at what was known as Shoreditch rail station in the 1920s. Click and drag the sliders to take a side by side look at the changes.

Closed in 1941 following a WWII air raid, Shoreditch’s original rail station sat on the corner of Old Street and Kingsland Road. The station buildings and former platforms on the viaduct are still visible today. The lines are now used by the new London Overground connection via Shoreditch High Street station.

The old station is now a trendy cafe bar and exhibition venue donned in true Shoreditch style with fairtrade coffee, homemade houmous and ciabattas.
