New food business cooked up

Feeling peckish and fancy a homecooked meal? If you live in North London you’re in luck as a Hackney homecooking startup has just launched, bringing residents in N16 a fresh, wholesome alternative to takeaways.

If you live in the Stoke Newington area you are lucky enough to be able to take advantage of the culinary delights of DishNextDoor, a new online food service.

DishNextDoor aims to provide wholesome, homecooked food as an alternative to takeaways and ready meals, through a location-based website.

People cooking at home sell their meals to people nearby. Customers use their postcode to look up food being made close by, pay through the site, then stop by the cook’s home to pick it up.

Over 30 of Stoke Newington’s finest home cooks are preparing to fire up their kitchens for the service.

The founders are three Hackney residents, Agnieszka Kij, Bob Conwell, and Joel Ng. Talking about the service, Ng said: “Once it’s past 7pm, your options really slim down – it’s either an unhealthy takeaway, or the expense of eating in a restaurant.

“I thought of my mum, who loves makes her amazing Malaysian curries for other people, and that there must be thousands of people just like her all across London, making wonderful food behind closed doors.”

New cooks must have the relevant food hygiene certificates (though free training is provided by DishNextDoor) before they can sell through the platform.

The team also visits each cook personally and tries their food, to keep quality and hygiene standards high.

As Ng said: “13 million people watched the Great British Bake-Off final – so you can see how many have an interest in home cooking. But many (myself included), don’t actually have time to do it for real, and resort to unhealthy, processed options like ready meals.

“DishNextDoor was founded on the idea that some of the best cooking takes place at home, behind closed doors. We wanted to provide a platform to celebrate the skills of these home cook heroes, and allow them to earn a little extra in the process.”

After launching in Stoke Newington, Joel, Agnieszka and Bob plan to expand across North and East London in 2016.
