MatchPint makes sure you never miss a match – Startup of the Week

Welcome to the third episode of the Elevator Pitch series 4.

Every week we publish a 30 second pitch from the latest intake of the Elevator Pitch. These leading startups join an alumni group that includes the likes of YPlan, Hassle, import.io and Glow, and has to-date raised over $36m.

In this series we took the founders on a cab ride unlike any other for the most exciting pitch of their lives.

TV has revolutionised sport. You can now watch countless events every evening and weekend, from football to rugby, darts to pool, and ice hockey to american football.

But with great power comes great stress. You want to go to the pub with your friends but you don’t know which pub is going to showing the match you want.

The plethora of both sports matches and pubs available has created a logistical problem even the greatest minds couldn’t solve.

If this situation sounds even slightly familiar, MatchPint is the app for you (available on iOS and Android).

Find a pub near you

MatchPint serves a number of purposes, depending on who you are.

If your a sports fan, looking for a place to watch a match or event, it lists all the pubs and bars where you can watch it.

You can sort by sport, specific event, team, area and pub feature.

Say you want to find a pub with a 3D TV and outdoor bar in Shoreditch that is showing the next England game, MatchPint will find one for you.

The back-end

For pubs and bars, it lets them organise their sports offering, as well as market to people outside of passing trade.

Co-founder Leo MacLehose explains:

These days, pubs just advertise on a billboard outside their pub whilst they’re paying many thousands of pounds to be able to show sport in their venue.

The relative marketing spend to get people watching that content is disproportionately low.

Brands such as Heineken and Diageo are already running campaigns through the app and website, which is driving even more customers towards the pubs that use it.

Going forward

In terms of its offering to both pubs and sports fans, its offering is relatively unique.

Having launched the website in September 2011 and the app in late 2013, the startup is set for an exciting future.

MatchPint has already raised over £400k from angel investors and is now looking to raise almost £1m to further scale the business.

The London-based startup now has a full schedule of campaigns through the rest of 2014 and 2015, including exciting developments for the Rugby World Cup coming to the UK next summer.
