Each week we trawl through the internet’s jumble sale of apps to bring you a cool, new app that will make your life better.
Our Download of the Week is a particular favourite of mine and among the best London-based music apps.
WhoSampled is your portal into the roots of music, letting you discover the most popular artists are and who has influenced who .
It’s available on iOS and Android (as well as online).
Did you know that’s a sample?
For some users, WhoSampled will open your eyes to just how much of popular music is based on other people’s samples.
From links between Nicki Minaj and Daft Punk to those between Jay-Z and James Brown, you’ll realise that the DNA of music is much more linked than you might have thought.
The whole system is based on WhoSampled’s database of music, the largest of its type in the world.
The app scans the whole music library of your phone and starts throwing musical insights at you.
Music expert?
If you think you know your stuff when it comes to music, you can also contribute to the database.
Submit covers, remixes, and samples you’ve spotted and help WhoSampled grow.
As users input and browse new music, it charts the most popular samples and artists.
At time of writing, the database had 278,915 songs and 162,838 samples.
