Each week we trawl through the internet’s jumble sale of apps to bring you a cool, new app that will make your life better.
This week’s download is TransferWise, available for free on iOS and Android.
Banks have had the monopoly for years. When transferring money abroad, they often charge you about 5% for the pleasure. Then came TransferWise.
Save you up to 90%
TransferWise’s technology effectively pairs you up with someone sending money in the other direction. That way, it’s able to give you a rate much closer to the actual exchange rate than the banks are.
It’s one of the most successful companies to have come out of London’s tech scene and now has an app to match their otherwise stellar reputation.
It’s new app offers the same features as the website, just on the go – particularly useful for those who need to make payments in a rush, or the increasing number who are shunning laptops and desktops for phones and tablets.

It lets you send money straight from your debit card into a foreign bank account. It also tells you exactly how much you are saving against the current bank rates, just so you can feel particularly smug.
Launched with iOS8, it’s part of the company’s next big push to take on the banks.
The app is actually just one of a number of big announcements from the London-based company this week. They also unveiled a new logo, website, and, perhaps most excitingly, a TV advert.
