Daresbury-based life science startup Spotlight Pathology has raised £125,000 in the latest investment from LYVA Labs.

The University of Manchester spinout develops AI tools for diagnosing blood cancer.

Research has suggested there is a significant shortage of trained pathologists in the UK, with those remaining facing extreme workloads.

Spotlight is hoping to ease this pressure through its automated assistance tools. The startup spun out of Manchester in 2020 and recently relocated its operations to the Sci-Tech Daresbury cluster.

The new investment marks the fourth investment into a female-led business from LYVA Labs, a Liverpool-based venture commercialising science and tech ideas.

LYVA Labs was established by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority with £11m to back companies.

Last year, LYVA Labs invested £145,000 into Myma Medical, a startup using AI cameras to increase the efficacy of IVF treatments.

“We are delighted to receive this investment from LYVA labs. The investment process was rapid and straightforward, allowing us to keep a focus on developing the business,” said Spotlight Pathology CEO Dr Sam Perona.

LYVA Labs head of investment Akshay Bhatnagar said the group was supporting the startup’s “mission to help reduce the number of people dying from blood cancer by providing the technology to allow more rapid diagnosis which will enable earlier treatment for the condition.”
