Former GCHQ boss Sir Jeremy Fleming has been appointed the chair of the recently established security tech investment firm Gallos Technologies.

Fleming will serve as the chair of the investor’s strategic advisory board, where he will guide the firm’s direction as it backs early-stage security startups.

As the British cyber intelligence chief, Fleming oversaw the establishment of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which has been tasked with bringing private cybersecurity startups together with the government to handle national threats.

“At a time when the world faces rapidly growing and evolving digital threats, fuelled by geopolitical instability, it’s crucial that we promote innovation in security technologies,” said Fleming.

“Our ability to protect both people and businesses, in the UK and other allied nations, depends on developing and harnessing the technologies of the future.”

Gallos was co-founded in 2021 by former diplomat Josh Burch and ex-military leader Dean Jones. The firm invests from pre-seed to Series B in startups developing security tech.

“The Gallos team’s deep understanding of global security threats and vulnerabilities gives us a unique perspective on the technologies that can and should be deployed to help mitigate them,” said Jones.

Firms backed by Gallos include Belfast-based internet of things (IoT) startup Angoka, and US military software developer Second Front Systems.

Fleming was succeeded in his role as GCHQ boss by former MI5 deputy director general Anne Keast-Butler.
