Is the UK falling behind on AI regulation?

The UK has made clear its intention to lead the world on AI regulation, with the prime minister going so far as to declare the nation the “geographical home of global AI safety”.

The UK has made some early strides, notably hosting the first international summit on AI Safety in November, however, Rishi Sunak’s ambitions may be in vain given the advancements made elsewhere.

In December, after much deliberation, the EU agreed on a world-first piece of legislation that strictly defines the rules of AI use in the region. Among the rules were transparency requirements for large language model, heavy restrictions on facial recognition software and bans on the use of AI in social scoring.

The EU isn’t the only major authority that has already started acting on AI regulation. The US, just days before attending the AI Safety Summit, passed an executive order on the government’s role in regulating the AI industry....
